Do you receive money from Lånekassen?

Applies to those attending upper secondary school for adults or preparatory training for adults and who will turn 21 years of age or more during the calendar year in which the academic year commences.

The grant can become a loan if you

  • Work and earn a lot of money
  • get a lot of money from Nav
  • don't complete school

I work and have an income

If you receive a grant from Lånekassen, you must know this: The grant can become a loan if you work a lot or receive money from Nav.

If you earn more than NOK 214,213 in 2024, parts of the grant can be turned into a loan, which you must pay back. If you receive money from Lånekassen for seven months or less during a calendar year the limit is NOK 535,532.

We look at your income throughout the year, even if you only receive support from Lånekassen for part of the year.

Remember that if you have applied for a loan in addition to a grant, you must repay the loan anyway.

Examples:

  • You receive money from Lånekassen in both spring and autumn 2024 (the entire calendar year). You work and earn NOK 250,000 this year. This is over the limit. You will not receive a full grant, but some loan.
  • You only receive money from Lånekassen in the autumn of 2024 (half the calendar year). You work and earn NOK 500,000 this year. This is below the limit, and you will receive a full grant.

I receive money from Nav

If you receive more than NOK 114,617 from Nav, part of the grant can be turned into a loan, which you must pay back.

If you receive money from Lånekassen for seven months or less during a calendar year the limit is NOK 321,318.  Remember that if you have applied for a loan in addition to a grant, you must repay the loan anyway.

These social security benefits can lead to a reduced grant:

  • Introductory benefit
  • Work assessment allowance
  • Transitional benefit for single parents (overgangsstønad)
  • Disability benefit
  • Qualification benefit
  • Unemployment benefit
  • Other taxable benefits

These social security benefits do not lead to a reduced grant:

  • Child benefit
  • Cash-for-care benefit
  • Financial assistance
  • Other tax-free benefits
Child grant:
483 359
is the limit for spouse or cohabitant income

I receive a child grant

If you have income, social security or assets above the limits, the child grant can be turned into a loan.

If your spouse or cohabitant earns more than you wrote in the grant application, the child grant can be turned into a loan.

The limit for spouse or cohabitant income is NOK 483,359 in 2024. Income above this limit can result in some or all of the child grant being turned into a loan.

Complete your education

The grant can become a loan if you do not complete your education, if you live with parents or if you have assets.

What if I don't complete upper secondary school or preparatory training for adults (forberedende opplæring for voksne)?

You must complete to get the full grant.

In preparatory training for adults (previously named primary and secondary school), you must attend classes to complete.

In upper secondary school, you must pass the exam or get a final grade to complete. If you don't complete, you have a loan that you need to repay.

I live with my parents

If you live with your parents, you will not normally receive a grant, except if you have children of your own who live with you. This does not apply if you have received a refugee grant.

I have assets

If you have assets above Lånekassen's limit, parts of the grant can be turned into a loan that you have to repay.

Where does Lånekassen get the information?

We obtain information about your income and assets (tax settlement) from the Norwegian Tax Administration.

If you have a spouse or cohabitant with children together, we also collect information for this person.

We will receive the tax settlement for 2023 during the summer/autumn of 2024. We will then calculate how much grant you were entitled to in 2023. We consider your income for the entire calendar year, even if you have only received money for half the year.

Lånekassen receives information about completed education from the school or the county council.
