Support for programmes of educations abroad during the summer

You may be eligible for support for certain summer courses, placements or fieldwork during the summer.

Who is eligible?

You may be eligible for support if your programme of education stipulates that the course or placement must take place during the summer, i.e. between 16 June and 15 August.

You may also be eligible for support during the summer if you will be participating in fieldwork that, for natural reasons, can only be carried out during the summer.

Requirements

You must be registered as a full-time student, including in the summer. You must study for at least ten months in each academic year, in addition to the summer course, placement or fieldwork.

The study programme has a duration of at least two weeks. If you normally study at a Norwegian educational institution and you are taking the summer course as an exchange student, the requirement is that the study programme must have a duration of at least four weeks.

Basic support

All students are eligible for basic support, which is what most people refer to as a student loan. Basic support is a loan, but up to 40 per cent of the loan may be converted to a grant. In order to be eligible for a grant conversion, you must complete your studies and your income and assets must fall below the set limits.

Tuition fees

If you have to pay tuition fees, you may be eligible for support for tuition fees However, you cannot get more support during the summer if you have already received the maximum support amounts for tuition fees for the rest of the academic year. 

Placement in Norway 

If you ordinarily study abroad but will be doing your placement back home in Norway during the summer, you will need to let us know if you will be living at home with your parents during the placement period.

How to apply    

The application deadline is 15 August of the summer during which you are undertaking the course or placement. If the course ends before 15 August, you will need to submit your application before the course ends.

Documentation when applying

When applying for loans or grants for summer courses, placements or fieldwork abroad, you will need to submit documentation from the educational institution.

Start and end date

Documentation must show the start and end date for both the ordinary academic year and the summer course/placement/fieldwork.

Subjects and credits

Documentation must show which subjects you are taking during the ordinary academic year and which subjects you will be taking during the summer. The number of credits must be shown in the documentation.

If you will be attending as part of an exchange programme from a Norwegian educational institution during the summer, the documentation must also show how many credits the course is approved for.

If you doing a placement, you will need to submit documentation from the educational institution confirming that the placement is approved as a mandatory element of your degree.

Full-time

You must document that you are a full-time student, including during the summer.

Tuition fees

You must include documentation showing how much you have paid in tuition fees during the ordinary academic year and what you may have to pay during the summer.

Locations other than the ordinary place of study

If the summer course, placement or fieldwork will take place in a location other than your ordinary place of study, this must be indicated in the documentation from the educational institution.

If you will be participating in an exchange programme abroad during the summer, you will need to document that the programme has been pre-approved by your Norwegian educational institution.
