The government's proposal for measures for customers of Lånekassen due to the coronavirus in 2021

Published: 29.01.2021
Today the Government proposed new measures for students. The Storting will now process these proposals.

The Government has proposed the following measures for customers of Lånekassen:

  • Students who have experienced a loss in income due to the coronavirus pandemic may apply for an additional loan of NOK 26 000. 40 percent of this will be converted to grant (NOK 10 400).
  • There is a temporary exception to the rule of “living away from home” for the spring semester 2021. Your loan may still be converted into a grant if you live with your parents.
  • There is a temporary exemption to the income threshold this year for students working in the healthcare sector, police students and students who are ordered to serve in the Home Guard or Civil Defence Corps.

Read about the proposals in the Government’s press release.

Please note that these are proposals and that there may therefore be changes when the Storting processes the proposals.
There will be more information on lanekassen.no in due course. Unfortunately, we cannot answer questions about the proposals before they have been adopted.

New additional loan in 2021

Students and pupils who have experienced a loss in income due to the coronavirus pandemic, will receive an e-mail from Lånekassen when it is possible to apply for the new additional loan. This will happen at the earliest by the end of February.
The Storting must adopt the proposal and the regulation about the additional loan must be determined before anyone can apply.

Payment deferrals in 2021

The Government proposes to continue the scheme of additional payment deferrals until 1. July 2021 for those who are making repayments on their student loans. You can read more about this on page 39 in the Government’s proposal for the Storting [pdf] (in Norwegian only).
