Am I eligible for grants and loans?
If you are under the age of 21 years, you may be eligible for:
- grant for course materials
- additional grant for those living away from their parents
- additional grant for those whose parents have a low income
- additional grant for those who have children
- loans for those over the age of 18 years
You can receive such grants and loans for up to two years for preparatory training when you are under 21 years of age. From the academic year that begins in the calendar year in which you turn 21, you can get loans and grants according to different rules. This means that you can get other types of loans and grants that are given to students and other adults in education.
How much money can I get?
You can get NOK 1,398 in a grant for course materials.
If you are living away from your parents, have children or you parents have a low income, you can also receive more money in the form of grants. If you receive social security benifits, it may result in you receiving less in grants. You can apply for the same amount of money as pupils under the age of 21 years who attend upper secondary school.
Some individuals are also eligible for a refugee grant
If you have received protection (asylum) in Norway, you may be eligible for a refugee grant when you attend preparatory training. You cannot receive a refugee grant if you live at an asylum centre or if you are in receipt of introduction benefits.
For those aged between 21 and 24 years
Did you receive a grant for course materials during the 2023/24 academic year? Or did you receive housing grant, income-dependent grant or such grants as refugee grants or loans pursuant to the rules for ordinary upper secondary education (Part 2 of Study Financing Regulation) during the 2023/24 academic year. If the answer is yes, the information above apply to you because you are included in the transition scheme.
If you have received any of the grants mentioned above for preparatory training in the two years before the 2025–2026 academic year starts, you are still not included in the transition scheme. Instead, you may be entitled to loans and grants according to the rules for higher and other education.
