There are no separate rules for students at educational institutions that go bankrupt. If you were studying at Pilot Flight Academy (PFA) and were affected by the bankruptcy, you were entitled to grants and loans up to and including 15 January 2026.
Payment deferral in 2026
No students affected by this bankruptcy will be required to start repaying their student loans in 2026, unless they choose to do so.
If you receive a student loan from Lånekassen for full-time studies during the spring and autumn semesters of 2026, you will not receive any repayment invoices, nor will interest accrue on your loan while you remain in this situation.
If you do not receive a student loan from Lånekassen for full-time studies, we will defer your repayment invoices so that you will not have to make any payments in 2026. Your first repayment invoice will be due in January 2027. However, if you wish to start repaying your loan earlier, you are of course free to do so.
Student loans cannot be written off
You cannot have your student loan cancelled solely because PFA has gone bankrupt. There are specific rules for when a student loan may be cancelled, for example in cases of permanent disability. Lånekassen cannot cancel loans in situations that are not covered by the regulations.
Interest for 2026 may be written off
Interest is charged on your student loan when you are no longer receiving student loans and grants for full-time education. However, the interest that accrues during 2026 for students affected by the PFA bankruptcy may be written off at a later date. This would require a regulatory amendment.
The Ministry of Education and Research plans to launch a public consultation in autumn 2026 on a proposal to amend the Regulations on the Repayment of Educational Loans, allowing interest accrued in 2026 to be written off in this situation. This follows up Parliamentary Resolution No. 627 (2025–2026).
The proposal must subsequently be considered as part of the national budget process in Parliament. It is therefore expected that a decision on whether the interest can be written off will not be made before December 2026.
Loans and grants if you continue commercial pilot training or start another education
If you start another full-time education in the autumn semester 2026, you must remember to apply for a new student loan before the deadline of 15 november 2026.
You can only receive the supplementary loan for commercial pilot training for two years. This also applies if you continue the training at another institution or restart the training. If you spend three years completing a commercial pilot training programme that is normally two years long, you may be entitled to the supplementary loan for up to two years, and the basic loan and grants for all three years. As a genetal rule you may be delayed by up to one year (60 credits) without losing your entitlement to the basic loan and various grants.
No loans or grants for commercial pilot training abroad
Lånekassen does not provide support for commercial pilot training outside the Nordic countries. Within the Nordic region, you can only receive loans and grants for commercial pilot training at public colleges or universities.
